Christmas

Christmas has come and gone. Christmas has happened and it was WONDERFUL. If I could only give my description of Christmas one word I would say: Family. And then of course Lucy Lucy Lucy.  My grandparents, Lucy's great grandparents even made the long drive up to spend Christmas with Lucy (and the rest of us, but really Lucy). I wish I could adequately capture the love that everyone has for the sweet girl. And SHE LOVED Christmas or really she loved playing with the paper, being held by everyone, blowing spit bubbles, talking with everyone, and being in the midst of the action. It was indeed an outstanding Christmas.
On Christmas Eve I had to work some, but after I was done (7:00pmish) I came  home and my mom had a feast of appetizers for us all and we opened gifts. Christmas day we went down to my Uncle's house in Minneapolis and then spent the night at my brother's house. We had a great time.
Here are some photos from our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Showered - overly blessed

This past weekend I traveled back home and was spoiled by not one but two different bridal showers. Seriously. It was crazy. It was tons of people who I haven't seen in a while (soooooo good to see everyone) and to have the chance to catch up a bit. I wish I had more time to catch up with people, but it just wasn't possible in that short of a time. It was fun to be back in SD for sure. I wish I got back there more often - a piece of me wonders if some day we won't end up back in SD, although who knows what will happen. Currently I am still loving northern Minnesota other than the distance from my family.

I LOVE these girls - we have grown up together - they are wonderful

Highlights:
  • Hanging out with my Hartj
  • taking Dakota to the dog park (even though it was ridiculously snowy)- Brainerd seriously needs one of these
  • spending time in South Dakota
  • seeing family & friends
    • I seriously have the world's best friends and family
    • I got to meet two of my new baby cousins that I haven't met before (they are ridiculously cute) and they have mastered the skill of snuggling
  • sooooo many new things
    •  now it's time to go through the old and get rid of what I can and donate what I can
  • I now get to send all sorts of thank yous
    • I LOVE writting letters and sending snail mail
  • hanging out with my parents
Everyone loves to snuggle the new babies
Anna & Jack

Downfalls:
  • I don't like knowing that my family is so far away
  • My drive on the way down was AWFUL due to the super craptastic weather & took me 3.5 hours longer than normal
  • The weather was less than desirable - who knew in mid April I would have issues with traveling due to weather. This is ridiculous. Spring please come.
  • The trip was a whirlwind
  • I wish I could have spent a week there
  • I didn't get to see quite everyone that I wanted to

Chaplain with the Police Department

Sometimes I find my call just strange and I stand back and laugh just a little when I think about what I do and how funny God is. I am amazed more often than not that God chooses to work in and through humans, I fear how often I fall short of where I could be, and yet God faithfully comes back and says "if your willing I'd love to work through you, my beloved child."

Recently I was asked to serve on an all male (other than myself) chaplain team for our local police, ambulance, fire departments. At first I'll be honest, I wanted to run, run far far away from this. I wanted nothing to do about it, but something inside of me, deep inside of me kept poking at me saying "you can do this, you'll be fine, I am with you, I have called you by name." So I agreed. I was told sometimes it is months between times we are called, sometimes it is several times in a week, I smiled and I think deep down I hoped I wouldn't be called. Shortly after returning from vacation and continuing ed, I got a call.

I am humbled by the places that I am invited into people's lives. I am humbled by the way God works when I have no words, in tragedy and what I consider the unexplained I have no words, I trust God who moves and speaks despite of me. I am humbled to have been called, I am honored to be a part of this team. I am honored to serve beyond the walls of the church and to the wider community.

Thanks be to God who works despite my shortcomings. Thanks be to God for people who can name my gifts and talents and challenge me to use them. Thanks be to God for emergency personal who work diligently in the midst of ridiculously hard circumstances. Thanks be to God who is always present and sheds the first tear when one of God's own hurts.

Fall/Winter to-do list

As I got in my car this morning to head to work and the car told me it was 29 degrees I decided it was time to start creating my fall/winter (they are combined because they are slightly overlapping type - some things are obviously fall and some obviously winter but they are all going on one to-do list). Here is the start of my (probably ever growing) to-do list (in no particular order):
  • get a wedding dress
  • visit an apple orchard - and eat copious amounts of fresh apples
  • go sledding - without it being for work (yes, I do have the world's coolest job)
  • learn three new crochet patterns - ones that actually challenge me
  • maintain my training schedule
  • have a photoshoot in a pile of leaves
  • visit a pumpkin patch
  • carve pumpkins
  • roast pumpkin seeds
  • clean out closets and dresser - donate all the clothes that no longer fit or I just don't need/wear
  • organize my "loft" space - I have this strange open space at the top of my stairs before you head into either bedroom upstairs and it needs some serious t.l.c.
  • finish my Disney 2011 December trip photobook
  • finish my 2011 photobook
  • finish my 366 in 2012 photobook (super excited about this book)
  • start and finish my 2012 photobook
  • make a pie from scratch
  • go skiing
  • give someone totally unexpectedly a Christmas gift
  • paint the upstairs bedroom
  • have a photoshoot in the snow
  • try making 5 new soups
  • go snowshoeing
  • write at least two letters a month
  • go ice skating
  • drive around to see the Christmas lights

What is on your fall/winter to-do list?
What am I missing from my fall/winter to-do list?
Do you have any fun winter projects?
How do you keep up your training in the months of ice and snow?
